Building Digital Security Literacy Together
Our learning programs started in 2018 because we kept seeing the same problem. People wanted to understand digital banking security, but most resources either talked down to them or threw around technical jargon that made no sense. We built something different—practical, supportive, and genuinely focused on helping everyday Australians feel confident about their financial security online.
How We Got Here
The program evolved from real conversations with people who'd been scammed or nearly lost access to their accounts. Each phase represents what we learned from those who came before.
Workshop Beginnings
Started with weekend workshops in community halls around NSW. Eighteen people showed up to the first one. They shared stories about phishing emails, strange password reset texts, and the growing anxiety of not knowing who to trust online.
Structured Curriculum Development
When lockdowns hit, we moved everything online and discovered something unexpected. People felt more comfortable asking "basic" questions through video calls. We turned those questions into modules covering authentication methods, recognizing social engineering attempts, and understanding what banks actually ask for.
Peer Learning Networks
Participants kept in touch after programs ended. They'd message each other about suspicious texts or new security features. So we formalized it—created cohorts where people could share experiences and support each other. Turns out security feels less overwhelming when you're figuring it out alongside others.
Advanced Topics & Specialization
Now we cover everything from biometric authentication to what happens when your data ends up in a breach. We added sessions on teaching family members, because grandkids deserve to bank safely too. The September 2025 cohort will include new content about AI-powered fraud detection and how to actually use those features.
Learning With Others Makes It Easier
Security can feel isolating. You're not sure if that email is legitimate. You wonder if you're the only one confused by two-factor authentication. Our cohorts prove you're definitely not alone, and learning together actually makes complicated topics make sense.
Weekly Live Sessions
Every Tuesday evening we tackle a new topic. Ask questions in real-time, work through examples together, and hear how others are handling similar challenges. Sessions are recorded if you need to miss one.
Small Group Practice
Break into groups of four to five people. Walk through actual scenarios like spotting fake banking apps or setting up secure password managers. Practice with people who won't judge you for getting it wrong the first time.
Ongoing Support Network
Private chat space for your cohort. Share suspicious messages, celebrate security wins, or just ask if anyone else is confused by a bank's new feature. Many groups stay connected well after the program ends.
What Past Participants Say
These are real experiences from people who went through the program. Not everyone becomes a security expert, but most feel significantly more confident navigating online banking.
I almost fell for a text message scam last year—would have given them my banking details if my daughter hadn't stopped me. After this program, I can spot those attempts myself. Still check with my cohort group when something seems off, but I'm not afraid to use mobile banking anymore.
The small group sessions surprised me. We'd get real examples of phishing emails and work through what made them suspicious. Having other people there meant I could ask "stupid" questions without feeling judged. Turns out half the group had the same questions I did about password managers.
Next Program Starts September 2025
Spaces are limited to keep groups small and discussion meaningful. Expression of interest opens in June. If you're tired of feeling anxious every time you log into your bank account, this might help.
